What is Generative AI?
Generative AI is a subset of AI that focuses on creating new content, such as text, images, music or even entire websites, without direct human input. It's like a virtual writer or artist that can produce content based on patterns and knowledge it has learned. Generative models are trained on massive datasets to understand patterns, relationships and structures within the data and use this learned knowledge to generate “new” content.
In the UN to date, the most promising use cases have to date focused on text creation, specifically content creation and summarisation, document and data analysis, communication and translation as well as chatbots.

What is the Generative AI Practice Group?
Together with the UN Data Strategy Team and colleagues from UN - DPPA and UNICEF, UNIN convenes a group on Generative AI. The group is open to colleagues from within the UN system wanting to learn more about generative AI and exchange with more technically minded colleagues. Its overall objectives are to:
- Foster an understanding of Generative AI, the opportunities and challenges it presents
- Map out the Generative AI landscape and applications across the UN
- Developing a knowledge repository
- Connect colleagues working on Generative AI applications to expertise (both internal and external)
- Help to avoid duplication of efforts by creating a platform that enables joint learning and exchange
The Generative AI Practice Group is currently only open to colleagues working in the UN system.
