Digital Public Goods & Open Source AI

This webinar hosted by the UN Digital Community introduced Digital Public Goods and the Digital Public Goods Standard, exploring their importance in promoting inclusive and equitable digital access. Lea Gimpel, Director of AI & Country Engagement at the Digital Public Goods Alliance, discussed the democratisation of AI, focusing on how open-source AI initiatives contribute to this goal by making advanced technologies more accessible and beneficial to a wider audience. The session also examined the role of AI systems as Digital Public Goods, highlighting how they can democratise the use, development, and governance of AI to ensure that its benefits are distributed equitable. Finally, Mark Irura Gachara, Technical Advisor from GIZ's Fair Forward initiative shared insights from his experience implementing open-source AI projects in Kenya.
