The arrival of ChatGPT, a multilingual chatbot that can generate new content without explicit human input, has made headlines globally. This Generative AI technology can analyse large amounts of data to create entirely new content and also identify emerging issues or crises that may be difficult for humans to detect. Some argue that Generative AI has the potential to enhance our work, however, it might also exacerbate biases or misperceptions.

This paper proposes the use of synthetic training data generated by large language models to improve machine learning SDG classifiers. It shows that supplementing existing training data with synthetic data produced by the ChatGPT tool improves the performance of the SDGClassy classifier.
